The Conservation District of Southern Nevada along with the Christmas Tree Recycling Committee will be hosting the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program from December 26 - January 15. Drop off your cut Christmas tree for free at over 20 convenient locations around the Valley.
Each year between Dec. 26 and Jan. 15 local government agencies, nonprofits and businesses work together in a joint effort to keep Christmas trees out of Southern Nevada's local landfill. The program was established in 2001 to educate the community on how recycling Christmas trees helps ensure the sustainability of our area by saving landfill space. When chipped into mulch, cut trees become valuable organic material used in landscaping projects that help conserve soil moisture and keep plants healthy.

How to Prepare your Tree for Reycling
Before dropping off your tree: 1. Remove lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments, nails, tree stands, and any other material that are not part of the original tree. 2. Flocked trees cannot be recycled. 3. Trees over 5ft. tall should be cut in half.
Trees are ground up as part of the recycling process, foreign materials can ruin the chipping machine. Non-organic materials aren't good for mulch and compost mixtures.

How Trees are Recycled
Trees are chipped into mulch, cut trees become valuable organic material. The mulch is used in many ways around the community such as; in landscaping projects that help conserve soil moisture and keep plants healthy, for composting, to control dust, mulch is also given away to community gardens and residents.
Free Mulch
Mulch will be given away on January 14, 2012 from 9am - 1pm at Pecos Legacy Park in Henderson. Bring a bag or box to put your mulch in. Eagle Scouts will be available to help load the mulch in your vehicle. Come early mulch will only be available until it runs out.
Free mulch a success!
Free mulch was available to residents for a one day first-come-first-serve event on January 14, 2012! Residents brought their buckets, bags, and truckbeds to haul away 12,000 pounds of mulch!
In 2011 over 17,000 trees were recycled. An 11% increase from last year! Tree-cycling efforts diverted 2,309 cubic yards of solid waste from the landfill which is roughly equivalent to 9 school buses! The chipped trees created 151 tons of mulch for landscaping projects and dust control. Saving the community money and creating a healthy environment.
The Christmas Tree Recycling Program has been a huge success with approximately 100,000 Christmas Trees recycled since 2001. This is equivalent to over 12,600 cubic yards of solid waste diversion and 822 tons of mulch created. Now that's something to be proud of Southern Nevada!
